At 8mm, PVC foam board stops being a sign and starts being a building panel. It is the minimum thickness Shine recommends for interior wall cladding on standard 400mm stud centers, and it is the practical starting point for shelving that carries real weight.
Celuka 8mm holds screws above 900N at 0.55+ density and machines cleanly for dado joints and recessed hardware. Furniture factories and fit-out contractors order it for shelves, partitions, and lightweight door panels.

From Print Substrate to Building Panel
8mm is approximately 4 times stiffer than 5mm at the same density. This is the thickness where the material begins to compete with plywood and MDF for non-structural panel applications. At 5mm, the board is a sign. At 8mm, however, it is a wall panel, a shelf, a furniture component.
Wall Cladding on Standard Stud Centers
8mm is the minimum thickness for wall cladding spanning standard stud centers. Interior wall panels mounted on 400mm stud spacing need to stay flat between supports. At 8mm Celuka (0.55 density), it provides sufficient stiffness for interior wall applications. By comparison, at 5mm, the same panel would show visible bowing between studs, and at 3mm, it would be visibly wavy.
CNC Relief Carving and Joinery
8mm provides sufficient material depth for CNC relief carving and joinery. The board provides enough Z-axis depth for pocket cuts, recessed hardware mounting, and joinery details, dados, rabbets, and lap joints, that are functionally impossible on 5mm or thinner board. A CNC-routed display fixture assembled with glued dado joints has structural integrity. By contrast, the same joints at 5mm lack adequate glue surface area.
Light-Duty Shelving
8mm is the practical minimum for shelving that carries weight. A Celuka shelf at 0.60 density provides greater rigidity than thinner gauges, making it suitable for light-duty shelving. The same shelf at 5mm, however, would deflect more under the same load and may visibly sag. For shelves carrying books, dishes, or retail merchandise, longer spans and heavier loads typically require 10mm, 12mm, or 15mm.

Interior wall cladding and decorative paneling is the primary application. Celuka panels on 400mm stud centers with stainless steel screws in slotted holes provide a flat, rigid, waterproof wall surface for bathrooms, commercial kitchens, and retail environments.
Display Furniture and Retail Fixtures
Display furniture and retail fixture panels use 8mm for shelving, counter faces, and display plinths.
Freestanding Outdoor Signage
Freestanding outdoor signage specifies 8mm Celuka B1 with UV stabilization, for signs up to approximately 1.5m², and deep-relief CNC carved signs use the material depth for multi-level carving.
Pricing Factors
8mm Celuka at 0.55 to 0.60 g/cm³, white, 1220×2440mm is the most commonly ordered structural panel specification. The per-sheet cost is approximately 60% higher than 5mm free foam, reflecting both the increased material volume and the Celuka manufacturing process. For applications that need the structural performance, the cost difference is justified. For applications that only need a printing surface, 5mm free foam is the more economical choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
8mm or 10mm for wall cladding?
8mm is sufficient for interior walls on 400mm stud spacing in low-traffic areas. However, use 10mm for walls in corridors, retail spaces, and any area subject to impact from pedestrian traffic, carts, or cleaning equipment, because the additional 2mm of thickness adds approximately 95% more bending stiffness.
Can 8mm Celuka board hold screws for shelf brackets?
Yes, at 0.55+ density, screw holding exceeds 900N (QB/T 5883-2023). Pre-drill pilot holes, use coarse-thread wood screws or confirmat screws designed for panel materials, and do not overtighten. For shelves carrying more than 20 kg, use 10mm or thicker board.
Is 8mm board suitable for exterior signage?
The thickness is sufficient for freestanding outdoor signs up to approximately 1.5m². However, thickness and outdoor durability are separate specifications. A UV-stabilized board type is required for exterior use regardless of thickness. To meet this requirement, Shine offers Celuka with UV stabilization and co-extruded board with a UV-protective cap layer for outdoor signage. Standard board without UV stabilizers is not recommended for exterior exposure. If your signage project will face direct sun, specify the outdoor application when requesting a quote so the appropriate UV-protected grade is selected.
