Panel Stiffness Comes From Three Factors<\/span><\/h3>\n

Rigidity in PVC foam board is not a single material property, it is the combined result of three factors. Understanding which one matters for your application is the difference between specifying a board that stays flat and one that sags.<\/p>\n

The Celuka Skin Carries the Bending Load<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Celuka skin carries most of the bending load.<\/strong> When a board bends, the outer surfaces experience the highest stress, the top surface in compression, the bottom surface in tension. Meanwhile, the material at the center of the thickness contributes far less to bending resistance. Celuka board places a dense, near-solid PVC skin (0.1 to 1.0mm thick, density ~1.3 g\/cm\u00b3) exactly where the stress is highest, at the surface. This is the same structural principle as an I-beam: put the material at the flanges, keep the web light. The skin is produced by flash-freezing the molten PVC surface against a chilled calibrator immediately after the extrusion die, before the blowing agent in the core has time to decompose and expand. The result is a panel that is significantly stiffer than free foam of the same overall density, because the densest material is positioned at the point of maximum mechanical advantage.<\/p>\n

Core Density Sets the Baseline<\/span><\/h3>\n

Core density determines baseline stiffness.<\/strong> Below the skin, the foam core provides thickness and shear resistance, and its density controls how much solid PVC exists between the gas bubbles to resist deformation. At 0.50 g\/cm\u00b3, the core contributes substantially less bending stiffness than the same core at 0.70 g\/cm\u00b3. The skin and the core work together. The practical choice: for shelving where appearance matters, Celuka at 0.55 to 0.65 g\/cm\u00b3 provides the right balance. For concrete formwork that will be stripped, cleaned, and reused, higher density grades (0.70 to 0.80 g\/cm\u00b3) can help extend the number of reuse cycles.<\/p>\n

Thickness Is the Strongest Lever<\/span><\/h3>\n

Thickness is the strongest lever.<\/strong> Bending stiffness scales with the cube of thickness. A 15mm board and an 18mm board of the same density differ in thickness by 20%, but the 18mm board is approximately 73% stiffer. When a shelf sags, increasing thickness from 15mm to 18mm is more effective than increasing density from 0.55 to 0.65. The trade-off: thicker boards are heavier, cost more, and take up more space. For cabinet shelves spanning 600mm or less, 15mm at 0.55 density is usually sufficient.
