Crossing into Self-Supporting Territory<\/span><\/h3>\n

3mm is the boundary. At 2mm, the material is a backing layer that must be supported by a substrate behind it. At 3mm, it crosses into self-supporting territory for the first time. A free foam sheet at 0.45 density, spanning 300mm between supports, deflects approximately 1 to 2mm under its own weight, visually flat. However, the same sheet spanning 600mm deflects 5 to 8mm, visibly sagging. The transition is graduated, not binary. The key is matching the span to the stiffness.<\/p>\n

A High-Volume Market Thickness<\/span><\/h3>\n

3mm is among the highest-volume thicknesses by sheet count across the PVC foam board market.<\/strong> It is the default for mounted print backing in the framing industry, the standard for retail shelf-edge signage, and the entry-level choice for trade show graphics that will be inserted into a frame system. This market position is driven by the combination of the lowest material cost per sheet among self-supporting gauges and adequate stiffness for framed applications. A print shop that mounts thousands of photographs per year uses a fraction of the material cost that 5mm would require, and for a print that will spend its life in a frame, the extra 2mm of thickness provides no functional benefit.<\/p>\n

Knife Cutting Faster Than Machines<\/span><\/h3>\n

The board cuts with a utility knife faster than any powered tool.<\/strong> At this thickness, it scores and snaps with 10 to 15 passes of a sharp blade. For a sign shop producing 50 small signs in a morning, the workflow is: mark, score, snap, stack, roughly 15 seconds per cut. By comparison, a panel saw or CNC takes longer to set up than to run. The matte surface requires no primer for UV printing, so it goes directly from the cutting table to the printer bed with no surface preparation step in between.<\/p>\n

Where Celuka Production Begins<\/span><\/h3>\n

3mm marks the boundary between free foam and the point where Celuka becomes available.<\/strong> It is the thinnest Celuka board kept in standard production. The calibrator that forms the hard skin can function at this gauge, though the skin is thinner (approximately 0.1mm) than on thicker Celuka board. For applications that need the screw-holding or surface hardness of Celuka at the thinnest possible gauge, small cabinet back panels and thin structural spacers, Celuka is available. For printing applications, free foam is the standard choice.<\/p>\n

Disproportionate Gains in Stiffness<\/span><\/h3>\n

At the same density, 3mm board is roughly 3.4 times stiffer than 2mm.<\/strong> The cube law of thickness means that the jump from 2mm to 3mm, just 1mm of additional thickness, more than triples the bending stiffness. This is why the gauge represents a functional threshold. The material cost increase from 2mm to 3mm is proportional (50% more material by volume). In contrast, the stiffness increase is disproportionate (340%).
